Early morning is often the best time of day for birding since they are busy looking for food and thus easier to observe.1 The most active times of year in temperate zones are during the spring and fall when various species might stop for a bite…or peck of food on their way to their second home.
One thing especially to keep in mind is that once you begin feeding birds, they can become dependent on it, especially in the winter.1 Then, too, consider the design and placement of your feeder so your wild bird feeder is for the birds…not the squirrels!!1 1And like most people, many bird species like a little privacy.
The food you choose for your birds might include bird feed mixes or seeds, nuts, kitchen scraps, and suet.1 Certain types of food attract certain birds.1 Finches love thistle seed; blue jays love corn; and hummingbirds, nectar.1 Sunflower seeds are popular among many species. Find just the new or used garden bird feeder you want in wood, stone, or metal.1 There are so many styles to choose from, including solar, water, lighthouse, or Victorian design.
